  Wyatt

  Fuck!

It’s time to tell Dad about Laura. He’s going to be pissed off, but it is what it is. I’m doing the right thing, and I adore her.

I move my hand in slow circular motion as I rub the polish onto the black paint on the gas tank of my Harley Davidson. Yeah, I bought it with the money that I saved from working summer jobs. It’s not new, but it’s new to me.

I take a few photos of my bike with my cell phone, grinning.

This Harley is a sweet ride. I can’t wait to take Laura for a ride, but it might not be for a while. She’s my high school sweetheart; and my world and having my baby.

  Fuck!

Dad’s here, so here it goes. I know that he’s not going to approve of what I did. Damn, Dad is the fucking Mayor of Portland, Oregon. He wants me to follow in his footsteps, and he’s thrilled that I got accepted to UC Davis, California, but that’s his dream. I have my dreams, and Laura is first on my list.

I watch him drive up the long driveway, closing the garage cabinet door.

Dad turns off his dark gray BMW looking at me.

“Hi Dad,” I yell, lifting my chin.

A minute later, he’s walking up to me, holding his bag.

“What’s up, Son,” Dad asks, stopping in front of me.

“I was polishing my bike,” I say, shrugging.

“The bike looks good,” Dad says, nodding and looking at my bike. He walks down the walkway to enter the house. I follow him, clenching my hands.

“What’s on your mind,” Dad asks, opening the door. He walks down the hallway and into his office.

“I have something to tell you,” I say, walking into the office. I stop in front of Dad’s desk.

Dad looks at me, placing his bag on the desk, furrowing his eyebrows.

“Sounds serious,” Dad says, staring at me, resting his hands on his waist.

“I would like to have Mom hear this,” I say, looking back at him.

“Okay, let’s go to talk to her,” Dad says, nodding. He walks out of his office, down the long hallway to the living room.

“Lisa,” Dad yells out, looking around.

I can hear my Mom walk down the hallway from the kitchen.

“Hi Chris, dinner is almost ready,” Mom says, with a kitchen towel in her hands looking at my Dad.

“Wyatt has something to tell us,” Dad says, resting his hands on his waist, looking at me.

“What is it, dear,” Mom says, looking at me.

“Dad, Mom, Laura, is pregnant. We’re married,” I say, looking at them.

“What? Did I hear, right? What the hell were you thinking,” Dad shouts, shaking his head?

“Oh my, dear,” Mom murmurs, twisting the kitchen towel.

“Dad, I love Laura, and she’s having my baby. I want to be there for them. Her parents signed the consent for her to marry. I’m really happy,” I say, holding his gaze.

“You fucked up Wyatt,” Dad yells, red-faced. He pulls off his suit jacket throwing it on the sofa, pulling his tie and unbuttons his white dress shirt walking over to the bar, pulls open the small refrigerator, leaning down to grab a beer bottle. He turns around, pulls at his tie, and takes a long pull of the beer closing his eyes.

I look over at my Mom, exhaling deeply. She shakes her head, crossing her arms.

“I don’t understand why you would ruin your life,” Mom says, walking over to the sofa. She falls onto it, sitting straight looking out the window.

“I love Laura with all of my heart; she’s having my baby. Why are you making such a big deal out of my decision,” I say running my hair through my hair?

“That’s because you ruined your fucking life! You’re not going to college, and I’ll be damn if I’ll support you and your wife,” Dad snarls, taking a long pull of his beer.

  “I d
on’t see why I can’t go to community college and then to the University of Portland. I can work while I go to school,” I say, furrowing my eyebrows.

“Yeah, you would think it’s that easy because you’re a damn kid! I don’t know how her fucking parents allowed this marriage to take place. For god sakes, they fucking gave their consent! I would have thought that they would have wanted to get rid of the issue, and we all go on our merry way,” Father yells, taking another long pull. He throws the bottle on the floor, shaking his head.

“I think that they only wanted to get rid of the problem by allowing for the marriage. Now it’s our problem,” Mom says, shaking her head. She rubs her right hand over her forehead, sighing.

“Really, Mom, Dad, you’re not happy that you’re going to be grandparents,” I ask, raising my arms in a questioning gesture.

I’m so fucking frustrated. Yeah, it’s surprising to learn that we married a couple of months ago, right after my high school graduation.

“I don’t want to discuss what I feel about a baby right now,” Dad yells, running his hands through his hair. He walks over to the bar, grabs another beer from the refrigerator.

“Dad, Laura will start her senior year in a few weeks, and I’ve enrolled at Portland Community college. I’m going to work,” I say, fisting my hands.

I feel so vulnerable and his mercy.

“Right, I understand, Wyatt! What you don’t understand is that you’ve ruined your life. Where do you think that you’re going to live,” Dad growls walking over, stopping in front of me.

“I was hoping that we can stay here until I find a place,” I say, staring at him.

“That’s not going to fucking happen! You need to get your place, and you can kiss college goodbye,” Dad says, taking another long pull of his beer.

“Seriously? You’re not going to give me your blessings and help,” I say, furrowing my eyebrows.

My younger brother Dane runs into the living room, looking around.

“What’s going on? I can hear the yelling in my room,” Dane says, standing next to me. He looks at us, raising his eyebrows and wide eyes.

“Your brother knocked up his girl and married her! This is the perfect example of what not to do,” Dad says, glaring at Dane, pointing at me.

“Wow, that was fucking stupid,” Dane says, looking at me wide-eyed.

“Don’t say a word,” I utter, lowering my eyelids, raising my chin.

Yeah, dear brother never does anything wrong in Dad’s eyes.

  Fuck!

“Hell yeah! I got this. I’m going to have this marriage annulled,” Dad says, nodding, looking at me, raising his right eyebrow.

“No! Don’t do that Dad because I’m going to be with Laura married or unmarried,” I say, clenching my jaw.

“Fuck! You’re a stubborn bastard. Lisa, you need to talk some sense into your Son,” Dad says, shaking his head, glowering at me as he walks out of the living room, down the hall heading to his office.

Mom pushes off the sofa, looks at me shaking her head.

“I don't know what to tell you, dear. Your Father is right; you’ve ruined your life. This love that you feel is just puppy love, but now you have a child on the way. I don’t know how you’re going to be able to support the baby. Did you think of all of this when you married her,” Mom says, crossing her arms.

“I did, I’m getting a job, and I’m going to college when I’m off work,” I say, nodding.

“Yes, as your Dad stated, that’s not an easy task. I’ll talk to your Dad, maybe he’ll change his mind about helping out,” Mom says, nodding.

“Mom, that would be awesome. Thank you,” I say, walking over to hug her.

Mom hugs me, pulls away, shaking her head, looking into my eyes, cupping my right cheek. Her brown eyes look troubled.

“I don’t know if it will work, so I suggest that you start thinking of plan b,” Mom says, pursing her lips.

“Right,” I say, looking at my brother.

“I can’t help,” Dane says, shrugging his slim shoulders.

I glare at him, inhaling deeply, clenching my jaw.

“Laura, that loser husband of yours is outside,” Mr. Compton yells from the living room.

I watch him lean forward, looking through the screen door. He gives me the middle finger shaking his head. He leans into his dark brown faux leather recliner, taking a long pull of his beer.

My chest tightens, making it hard to breathe. I clench my fists, inhaling deeply and exhale to control my anger.

  That man is fucking incredible!

I walk down the walkway turning the corner to look at Laura’s bedroom window.

I know that Mr. Compton is pissed off because I got her pregnant, and she’s still in school. He did consent for our marriage, and that’s all I care about. And now that we’re married, he still doesn’t want us to be together.

The man is impossible to talk to.

Fuck, I need to get a job to take care of Laura.

I pace on the walkway waiting for Laura to come out.

A few minutes later, Laura comes outside, smiling. She walks into my arms, hugging me tightly.

“Baby, I’m sorry about Father,” Laura says, looking up, furrowing her eyebrows together.

“No worries, I’ll deal with it. I’ve been looking for a job, and my Dad doesn’t want us in the house, so we need to get an apartment,” I say in a low tone so her Father wouldn’t hear.

“I know that you will get one soon, it will work out. Wyatt, I love you, and I can’t wait to get our place,” Laura says, smiling.

“Yeah, I hope you’re right, because I can’t stand being apart much longer, especially now that you’re mine. Baby, I love you,” I say, holding her close.

  Fuck!

I need her, but I don’t want her parents to get pissed off at her.

“Will we be able to stay in the same neighborhood so I can finish my senior year,” Laura asks, looking at me.

“Yeah, maybe, but this area is expensive,” I say, sighing.

“Yeah, I know,” Laura says, taking my hand. She walks over to stand at the tree near the garage.

“I ran into Dan Lim, and he’s hyped up because he signed up for the Marines. He was telling me about everything, the benefits, housing, and education. I think that it could be what we need,” I say, pulling her into my arms. I kiss her temple, moving slowly down to her neck.

“I don’t want you to go into the Marines,” Laura says, hugging me tightly.

“Baby, this is what we need. I’ll get housing, get paid, health benefits, and an education,” I say, pulling back to look into her soft brown eyes.

“Wyatt, please don’t do this,” Laura says, shaking her head.

“It’s for the best Baby, but I will give it a few more days to find a job; otherwise, I’m enlisting into the Marines,” I say, cupping her face.

  “Okay,” Laura says, nodding.

  A couple of weeks later.

I need to get a job.

  Fuck!

I never thought it was going to be this hard to get a decent job that pays enough for me to get a small apartment. Yeah, Mikey D is hiring, but I wanted some type of construction work or a major hardware store.

I pull into the garage, turning off my bike. I take off my helmet, looking at the bike.

  Damn!

I’m going to sell my bike to have some money to get the deposit for the apartment. I have to do this.

A couple of minutes later, I walk into the kitchen to get something to eat from the refrigerator. I look inside, looking for leftovers. I take out the small container that has leftover lasagna, smiling.

“Son, did you get a job,” Dad says, walking into the kitchen look at the lasagna.

“No luck, would you like me to warm some lasagna up for you,” I say, looking at him.

“You need to hustle because you need to get your place. I can get this marriage annulled; in fact, I think that would be best, Son,” Dad says, gruffly.r />
“No, don’t do that, Dad, I love Laura. I want my baby,” I say, placing the lasagna container on the kitchen counter.

“This is absurd, you’re my Son, and you will do as I say. You’re too young to marry and to carry such a huge responsibility! You need to go to college, enjoy this time,” Dad says, crossing his arms.

“No, I’m not going to allow you to do that, Dad. I have this covered. I started the paperwork to enlist in the Marines,” I say, looking at him, standing tall.

“Fuck, Wyatt! You’re going off the fucking plan we had for your future! I don’t like it, are you sure it’s the best you can do at this time,” Dad says, grinding his molars.

“Yeah, I think so,” I say, nodding. I turn to warm up the lasagna.

  Weeks later.

“Laura, please don’t go there. This is the best option, we’ve talked about it for weeks,” I say, pulling her into my arms. She rests her head on my shoulder. I run my hand up and down her back, staring out into the dark parking lot.

“I can’t stand the thought of you leaving me for who knows how long! I have to stay at home and listen to my Father. I’m going to be alone dealing with the pregnancy,” Laura yells, pulling out of my arms, taking a few steps away from me. She crosses her arms, turning to stare at the car's speeding down the street.

What the fucking hell is wrong with her? She’s not acting herself, and she’s acting out now.

  Fuck!

Where did my sweet girl go?

  This is crazy.

The rain is pouring down hard as we stand under the awning at the front door of the dinner waiting for the rain to stop. I look around the parking lot, and I watch the cars race down the street, past the diner.

“You should stay with your parents, so your Mom can help you when the baby is born. I sold my bike, and I’m going to give you the money tomorrow. I’ll be back after the training, and then I’ll be deployed for a while. I’m checking into the housing, Baby, this is for us,” I say, running my hands through my hair.
